"TRADE IS BRISK"

Minister Reviews Industry in New Zealand INCREASED PR0FITS

(By TBlegraph—

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. " Further evidence of brisk trading conditdons is contained in the periodical reports from my district officers in the four centres," said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in an interviow to-day. 1 1 This activity ua Dominion-wide and extends to praetically every line. ' ' Reports for the quartet- indicate heavy trading, both wholesale and- retail, and merchants report that trade has shown a. distinct improvement on that of the corresponding quarter last year. The reports prove beyond all doubt that t"he people of the Dominion are enjoying greater prosperaty than they have dono for many years past and this is due in' a very large degree to the Government's policy in increasing the- purchasing power of the people, despite melodramatic statements to the contrary. The pbsition in which our manufacturing lin-dustries are placed today is immeasurably better to that in which they were two years ago and steps are being taken by the Government to see what can be done to still further improve the position of those industries which we coneider might be adversely affected by overse&s competitnon. ' ' Speaking generally, Btaffs and productions have increased appreciably " and many industries are working to full capacity and are unable to supply. orders on hand. The district offic-er at Auckland informs me that six public companies in Auckland announced dur- . ing the quarter the results of their trading for the past yeur, and every oue of these companies showed decidedly inereased net proiits over the previou-i year. One well-known firm, in fact, increased its net pvofit from £61 000 to £104,000. " This report is typieal of those I am receiving from my other officers and is ■delhute proof that 'industry as a wholeis enjoying a period Of prosperity which has not been theirs for many years."
