Danish Shipping Prospers Despite Lack of Subsidies
COPENHAGEN.— Danish shipping qpntinues to prosper, according to the Statistical Department's Freight Index for 1937. The size *of the merehant fleet is practically unchanged this year, but there have been some renewals, including a number of speeial vessels for passengers, fruit and oil carrying. More than one third of the fleet is less than 10 years old, and ll'.l per cent. less than 5 years old. Although government ^ubsidies wero again increased in several of the large maritime countries last year, Denmark is still among the f ew remaining countries where shipping manages for itself, and enjoys neither government support nor government preference of any description. Notwithstanding this, and in spite of the fact that its expenditure on wages is as high as in most other countries, Denmark has succeeded in holding her own in competition. "We have some nice oatmeal soap to-day," suggested the girl in the shop. The customer answered politely, "No, thanks. We never wash our oatmeal."
