New Homes Yield Historical Relics of Ancient Hawaii

HONOLTJLU. — If you want to collect ancient -Hawaiian objects and historical relics you do not have to fbllow priiuitive trails and excavate ancient living sites— -you can do just as well in moderh American living rooms and parIouts. That is the inference drawn from the acquisition oi ohe of the largest collections of ancient Hawaiian articles in existence, which has found itg way into Honolulu's famous Bishop Museum, Collectors who were successful ia locating and brin^ing back for cataloguing scores of stone adzes, poi pounders, weapons and fishing articles employed by the primitive Hawaiians did much of their exploring in homes that possess radios, . electric ice boxes and eurling irons. The quest was confined to the island of Maui, second largest island in the territory of Hawaii and it met with so much succesa that museum officials are engaged in selecting the best specimens of the lot for indexing instead of indexing- them all. The relics had be#n picked np here and there by Tesidents of the island over a period of years during hiking and fishing trips which took them through ancient fishing settlements, battlefields and living sites. Some were found being useed as door-stops, paper weights and objects for^interior decorations. The collectors obtained some as gifts ani bought dthers.
