Wandering Stock Case

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. "It'a hard on the oows," declared Harqld Meinung, of Otawhaio, Takapau, when he alleged in the Magistrate's Court at Waipukurau to-day before Mr J. Miller, S.M.. that in a herd of oows the ranger drove from the road wherq they were straying to Takapau, there' had been "four slips, one dead and another with a rupfured stomach."Meinung was charged with having permitted stock to wander, and pleaded not guilty, on the grounds that the cows were not lms, but his mothor's and that he was a carpenter vrdtk* ing in Dannevirke. Mr Y. A. Patterson, the Waipawa County Counojrs ranger, stated that the cowt were eollected from the road at 2.15 a.m. and drivew to the poiind at Takapau, where they arrived about 7.35. He oonsidered there were pq grounds for the aliegation of rough treatment. The Magistrate remarked that that questipn should be tbe subjeot of another inquiry, Continuing, the ranger said M."rs Meinung had signed for the stock on behalf of her son. His Worship said that if the ownership of tbe cows was in doubt he would adjourn the case till next Court day, whereupon defendant said. °You might as well have me up now. I'd lo'se too much time otherwise, bilt it's hard on the cows." He tliereupon chaflged his plea to guilty, and was fined £1 with costs 10/-. ^ On a similar charge, also brought by Mr Patterson, James Grapt, of Otawhaio, Takapau, was fined 5 - and oosts'12/-.
