Old Soldiers' 100th Birthday

HAMILTON, Last Night. The last of the 40th Foot Regiwent, » which landed in New Zealand in 1860, Mr Enos Holloway, of Morrinsville, will reach the age of 100 years on Saturday. Mr Holloway has not been beyond his gate for a year or sd now, but lie is still interested in the aft'airs of his district and will talk readily on a variety of Subjects. His heariiig is perfectly good and, as befits an "old soldier, his grip is firm aud his back straight. Queeu Victo'ria Avas 18 years old and had been proclaimed Queen, but riot crowned when Mr Holloway was born in the village of Halberton, in Devonshire. The father had been granted contract worlt on the Great We3tern Rhilway, but the .son, at the age of 18, joined the 40th Foot Regixnent, and in 1855 left England bound for Australia. By 1870 het was in Taranaki, two compauies having come across from Australia, and later he caine to Auckland. After ll years5 active service he joined the commissariat, and in that capacity he went to Rangiriri, Ngaruawahia, Te Rore and Te Awamutu. At Te Awamutu he martied, and after a period settled down in Morrinsville. A son, Mr S. Holloway, has lived under the same roof for the past few years. There are two other sons, Mr G. E. Holloway, of Papatoetoe, and Mr W. H. Hollowoy, of fet. Helier 's Bay, Auckland, and three daughters, Mrs W. Bell and Mrs A. Tozer, of Paj)atoetoe, and Mrs E. Clarke, of T'e Awamutu. There are 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
