MID-WEEK HOCKEY

Pirates Retain the Banner DEFEAT OF HUIA Good weather prevailed yesterday for the corapletion of the second round in the Hastings mid-week hockey competition. Althougjh the grounds had hardened up and as a resuit were very bumpy, some good hockey was witnessed. Only one senior game was played, this being between Pirates, who are leading in the competition, and Huia, who were in seoond place. The game was also for the challenge banner held by Pirates. The game was, as expected, a hard-fought.one. Pirates opened their account when B. Walsh scored from a good forward movement. The next goal was scored by Pirates when, after a good centre froin Orr on the right wiqg, MacDonald netted from a melee in the goalmouth. Thq pace was maintained after the interval, and Pirates increased their score when Wilcock goaled. with a hard shot from a penalty- corner. For a time the game was in i'avour of Huia, and tbe defence, thanks to Barden and Treacher, held for a time, but eventually Huia opened tlieir account when Tau Hemapo goaled. Huia continued to attack until the. tinaf whistle. The game ended in favour of Pirates by three goals to one. Parkhill in goal was outstanding for Pirates, and Russell was the pick of the Huia backs. The game was ably controlled by Messrs Mardon and MacNab. The other senior game scheduled to take place was ■ between Karori and Waimarama. Karori, Jiowever, defaulted, and the match took the form of a friendly game. JUNIORS. High School defaulted to Pirates, and the only game played in the ]unior grade was between Karori and United Blue. The match was very evenly contested, but the final whistle saw Karori the winners by two goals to one. Goals for the winners were scored by Bone and Symons. — Messrs Mardon and Parkhill umpired.
