LAGOON DEVELOPMENT
Stock-Grazing and Pasture'* DOGS WORRY1NG THE SHEEP The Ahuriri Lagoon area is already being brought into profitable occupatiOn to some extent. On the portion between the main gravdty outfall and fhe Taradale and Wharerangi roads, although it is still in a fairly rough (state, there is an abundance of f eed, and about 650 sheep have heen depasturing on this area for some time, have thriven splendidly and are in excellent con» dition. These sheep are hreeding ewes heavy in lamb, and some trouble has been experienced of late from the activities of sheep-worrying . do'gs^ which have destroyed several of the eweS and hunted, worried, and injured others. Orders have been given to shoot all dogs found on the lagoon area, and one dog was shot this week. An additional 450 breeding ewes have been added to the fiock, making 1100 in all. l&ter, 100 two-year-old steers will be brougbt down from tbe Kakariki Block and placed on the area for grazing purposes. A programme of ehelter plantation has been drawn np for the 2000 acres dn which development work is at present being c&rried out. When this has been done breeding cattle will be put on the block. These operations will pave the way for further extensive planting and "development.
