TUTAEKURI MOUTH
Satisfaction at Workmg oi the Croyne SETTLING-DOWN PROCESS General satisfaction with the mauner in which the groyne constructed at the new mouth of the Tutaekuri river is f'unctioning is felt ' by officials of thd Hawke's Bay Rivers Board. It is not auticipated°that a great deal more constructional work will be required to cpmplete the groyne. Though the river has taken a suddeu and unexpected turn to the north, it is finding an outlet adjacent to the groyne, and in consequence the piles apd other eoncrete work are being made to settle down much sooner than expected. An inspection of the work was ea*' ried out during the week-end, and officials have satisfied themselves that all that will be required is a little eoncrete work at the extreme end of the groyne •where the breastwork has been wrenched somewhat by the end falling away. To enable this work to be done, efforts are to be made again to open up a more or less temporary mouth a little to the south of the present mouth in practically the same position as it wan before the waters recently turned towards the north. Actually What the board officials desire more than anything else is a good flood in the river. Such a happening would be of the greatest assistance to the work, for it would clear away a large area of loose and shifting shingle and earth and make a good job of the new mouth by scouring out a deep and permanent channel.
