SEVERAL DEMONSTRATIONS AT ARTS & CRAFTS MEETING

The arts and crafts circle of the Hastings Townswomen 's Guild held their meeting last week in the W.D.F.U. room, the meeting being largely attended. Mrs. L. W. Goldfinch presided and with her were Mrs. A. C. A. Hyde, the secretary, Mrs. A. F. Glenny, president of the guild, and Mrs. Deans were also present. Several new cnembers were greeted and also visitors present. As August will be the circle 's birthday, members were asked to contribute towards the afternoon tea- and a request was also njade for a good entry in the competitions for a plate of shortbread and the best smocked article. , J There would also be a demonstration on lamp shade making, and a social hour to follow. Miss MacMichael continued her lesson on seagrass and string stool weaving, many members finishing stools begun the previous imonth. During an interval, the leader shpwed members how to make a light spring jumper in a simple stitch, which was quickly executed and dainty in appearance. Mrs. Whetstone, a valued member, then showed how to make pictures from cretonne or silks. Sprays from a pretty flovjered cretonne were cut out and arranged on cardboard, then pasted on glass and back with hangers attached, the whole being finished with black passe-par-tout binding. The finished article was very dainty and much admired. Mrs. Goldfinch heartily thanked the demonstrators for their very interesting lessons, especially Miss MacMichael who had attended the meetings on two occasions and given lessons to the 16 members who had made seagrass stools; The competitions for the best eggless cake, kindly judged by Mrs. A. F. Glenriy and Mrs. Deans, resulted as follows: — Miss Ebbett 1, Mrs. Dyer 2, Mrs. Rood and Mrs. Campbell equal 3. The judges remarked that the cakes were wonderfully good for eggless cakes and ehch was worthy of a prize. Members were rehiinded that a meeting of the committee would be held on Saturday, August 7, at 2.30 p.m.
