WAIPAWA, Last Night. Ihe report of the president of the Waipawa Cbamher of Commerce, Mr F. M. Tickner, preseuted at the anuual geueral meeting held on Saturday uight stated "The raising of iunds for Lhe \ustalling of festoons of coloured lights for the main streets was undertaken by your conmuttee, aud tbe appcal met with a very generotis respoase from the business people, the \?hole cost of the 6cheme being raised by voluntary contribution. This feature has had tlie eft'ect of bnghtenhig the town cc usiderably on late shopping nights and on uumerous speciai occasrras. "Your committee has associaterl itseil with numorous mattere of pubiic interest, and has lent its inliuence in the requests made to the Government from time to time by local bodies. "Members of the committee were included in the deputation which waited on the Minister of Education regarding the new school site, and it is pleasing to know that on that occasion this old and vexed question was finalised, the new site having been approved, and a new school in the near futura is now assured. "Your committee also took part in the discussion regarding the establishnient of a junior higih school in Cenn tral Hawke's Bay, and strongly pressed the claims of' Waipawa as being the most central place ior its erection, The Chamber took the initiative in caiiing a meeting of representatives of all school committees in the Waipawa rural area. at which it was resolved to further press the claims of Waipawa from the point of view of the convenience to the prospective pupils of euch a school. This matter has not yet been finalised aud the efforts of the Chamber will no doubt be continued towaids obtaining a decision in favour of Waipawa. "During the past year the Chamber also joined in representations to the Minister of Pubiic Works regaiding the erection of a new traific bridgie adjacent to the business area, and the Minister' s sympathetic hearing of the request gives hope of this important work being put in hand within a reasonable time. When the Hou. Mr Suilivan, Minister of Railways and industries and Commerce, visited Waipawa recently, the Chamber was represented at the reception given in his honour and when matters of pubiic interest were brought to his notice. "After many years of endeavour, the Chamber and the pubiic generally will be gratified that plans have been prepared for the erection of a new and up-to-date Post Office, and it is understood that the work of this muchneeded building will be put in hand shortly. Other matters taken up with tho authorities during the period included the provision of a rail-car service for Hfiwke's Bay. This service has not yet been granted, but it is probable that it will be in§tituted iu the near future. "Two very enthusiastic members, as well as good citizens, were recently transferred from Waipawa, Messrs Yates and Sawyer. Both these gentlemen gave willing and untiring service to the town "and their efforts were much appreciated. by the commuuity "
