EARTHQUAKE LOANS

Representations to Minister The demand reeently made _by the Treasury for the payment of interest and prineipal on the earthquake loans by the Hastings Borough Council and jther local bodies was discussed with the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, during his visit to Wellington last week. Mr Maddison outlined the position that had arisen, pointing out that no provision had been made by the council or the local bodies concerned for such xiyments in striking their rates, and •lealing with the matters already mentioned in his representations to the Hon. D. G. Suliivan reeently. . "The Minister agreed that this question should be left in abeyance in the meantime pending the return to New Zeaiand of the Prime Minister t the Rt. Ilon. M. J. Savage, and the Minister of Finance, tlio Hon. W. Nash," said Mr Maddison.
