Though. the Japanese and Chinese armies are still standing in North China within striking distance and English and American residents of Peiping have been warned to assemble at safety points the moment the alarm was sounded, the situation is reported to be easier in consequenee of an understanding or, at least, a truce pending settlement, believed to have been reached between Tokio and Nanking. This report comes from the Daily Telegraph's Tokio eorrespondent and also from Shanghai, which adds: "The terms have not been published for fear of exciting public opinion, but it is under Ktood that all Japan 's demands have been met." The Daily Telegraph's Tokio correspondent says: "It is imposgible at present to say which side is making concessions, but the Japanese War Office to-day ordered the suspension of the shipment of war supplies to Chiua. The Chinese 37th Division and the 29th xoute army began to evacuate Peiping to-night but Chinese troops are still holding Wangping and the Marco Polo bridge at Loukouchiao and .Papaosban. Traffic has been resumed on the PeipingHankow railway," A Tiehtsin report states that the Japanese arrested Tsai Sliutung, a fbrmer officer of the Chinese Army on the suspicion of being involved in a plot to assassinate the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Kawagoe,
