Though. the Japanese and Chinese armies are still standing in North China within striking distance and English and American residents of Peiping have been warned to assemble at safety points the moment the alarm was sounded, the situation is reported to be easier in consequenee of an understanding or, at least, a truce pending settlement, believed to have been reached between Tokio and Nanking. This report comes from the Daily Telegraph's Tokio eorrespondent and also from Shanghai, which adds: "The terms have not been published for fear of exciting public opinion, but it is under Ktood that all Japan 's demands have been met."
