Labourer's Demand from Showman

AUCKLAND, Last Niglit, A chargei of demanding £100 from Alexo Dilopoulo with intent to steal was denied in the Supreme Court today by Albert Henry Webber, a labotirer, who stood trial before Mr Justioe Fair. Mr V. R. Meredith, for the Crown, said it was alleged " on the night of Satiirday, May 1, during a earnival week at Dargaville, Webber entered a' marquee where Diiopoulu, a Greek reared in Egypt, was conducting a show. Displaying a card printed "DetectlVeSergeaut Hall, Auckland," Webher complained of misrepresentation in regard to the act of a 'limbless woman" ajxd also that the show was indecent. He asked Dilopoula to go to the poliee station. On' Teaching the building Webber asked for £100, saying for that amount Dilopoulo would not be arrested and deported. Dilopoulo said in evidence that when the aceused asked for £100 he, the witness, became suspicious and asked the aceused to return to the marquee, as his wife was the treasurer. Later his wife sent for the poliee, but aceused had disappeared. Webber stated in evidence that the whole affair was a joke. He did not deny that he represented hjmself aa a detective, but he denied demanding money. After & retirement of two hours, the jury brought m a verdict nf guilty, and the aceused was remanded for sentence.
