BRILLIANT DECORATIONS FOR ANNUAL BALL OF TE AUTE COLLEGE
Silhouelted in the bright moonlight against the dark background of trees, and the grounds illumdnated with dozens of twinkling coloured Jights, Te Aute College cast forth a brilliant welcome to the many' bundreds of visitors who arrived at the eolleg© on Wednesday evening for the annual ball, following the interesting Wanganui Collegiate School — Te Aute College football lnatch, which had been played that ' afternoon. Entering through the spacious oorridors under arclies of greenery the ball-room was reached, when a brilliant spectacle met the eye. For many weeks past Mrs Loten, with the, help of the college boys, had, been working on this exotic decorative schemej and the eifect achieved was outstanding. . The whole. of the back oi the stage was. filled in with a ^littering sheet of silver5 on which coxoured spotlights played' during the evening. Un eaeh side oi this were zig zag trellises completely covered with every conceivable colour of brilliant Celiojpiiane iiowers^ while above were big bunches of greenery sparkling with coloured lights. All the front of the etage was filled in with similar decorations. The sides of the hall were covered with greenery, while a unique piece of work done by the college boys filled in the back of the hall. This was a lxuge banne^of interlaced paper in the Wanganui ■ Coilegiate School and Te Aute College colours, upheld by two glittering poles," while above were strings of coloured lights continuing right round the hall. All the lights were shaded in coral pink, vvliile above the heads of the dancers floated streamers in the college colours. in the upstair dance room similar decorations had been used, the stairway and corridors being entwined with greenery. The lounge-room was cosily arranged with comiortable chairs and soias and decorated with tall pahns and fragrant spring fiowers. Les. Henry's orchestra played popular dance musie, having to respond to many encores^ and the collegp boys were accorded a great ovation, for their haka and school choruses staged during sthe evening. ' A ' sutoptuous s upper was served in the big dining-room, the leng tables looking most attragtive decorated with bowls of golden iceland poppies, japonica and copper birch, Mrs Athol Williama being responsible for tbese eft'ective decorations. The hosts and hostesses for the Wanganui football team were; — Mr M.. Chambers (Havelock Nofth), Mr Coleman- (Havelock North), Mr and Mrs E. Groome (Te Onepu), Mr and Mrs J. W. Harding (Waipukurau), Mr Henderson (Taradale), Mrs F. Hewitt (Waipukurau), Mr W. Jamieson (Hastings), Mrs Logan (Napier), Mr J. Lyons (Hastings), Mr and Mrs I. W, N. Mackie (Waipukurau),. Mrs McHardy (Waipawa)^ Mr Mclntyre (Hastings), Mr Nilsson (Havelock North), Mrs Rainbow (Hastings), Mrs SunderJand (Hastings), Dr. H. M. Wilson (Hastings). Mr and Mrs Loten received their guests, the latter wearing a model French gpwn in gold bullipn satin, the ruchings on the corsage caught with pearls and a three-quarter redingote of gold net lame, having butterfly stiffened sleeves and a big rosette of bronze velvet studded with pearls in coiffure. Mr Gillighan, principal of AVanganui College, and Mrs Gillighan, the latter wearing an elegant gown in black 'chiffon patterned in diamante, having narrow diamante shoulder strap. Mrs J. Hogg, black French crepe, patterned in big pink fiowers worn with a white fur wrap. - Mrs Dwyer (Wellington) t chose a model gown in blue talfeta, having full ruched sleeves and a matching headdresB. > . . IMrs .G. Williams' frock was of prune velvet, having full sleeves. of embossed velvet. Mrs T. J.. G. Warren, silver lace frock, having a full hemJine, and prettily draped oorsage. Mrs D. Miller carnation georgette ooin spotted in black, fashioned with flared sleevelets. Mrs F. Melhuish (.Napier), black and pink flowered georgette, with square diamante clasp in each shoulder. Mrs Brooks (Waipukurau), frock in black marocain worn with a pink velvet corsage spray. Mrs G. Warren' s frock was of deep jade moire taffeta, slimly fashioned. Mrs E. Groome, trained gown in
silver faille closely patterned in autumn tonings. Mrs Brian Williams was gowned in bottle green velvet. Mrs F. Hewitt, black ring velvet, the cowl neck and long shoulder scari lined with cream satin. Mrs I. W. N. Mackie, wearing black satin royai, the skirt trained, worn with a choice shoulder spray of pink velvet roses. Mrs J. Oram (Gisborne), tomato shaded . satin crepe, having a turned down jewel collar. M rs D. Ellison, paie pink taffeta, having flared stitched sleeves. Mrs C. flartland, frock in mulberry crepe, the skirt embossed in gold, worn with a gold lame coat. Mrs S. Peterkins, black stiifened taffeta, having a big bow at the baek and a nstural shoulder spray. Mrs S. Peacock was wearing a black cire satin skirt with a black lacquered red- spotted jacket. Mrs G. Winlove, ocean blue chiffon, flowered in rnisty pink fiowers, having a ruclied shoulder cape. Miss Mary Wilson, inar ma blue crepe, having foki« of silver lame on corsage. Miss J. Faulkner, sky bluo taffeta, having a very full skirt and a shoulder spray of pink roses. Miss Lorna Pepper, -paie pink crepe do cliene over pink satin, with elongated frills on skirt and over the shoulders. Miss Sualaum (England), shimmering gown in floral stiffened net, the square-cut neckline finished with a narrow frill". Miss H. Coleman, black and gold frcck, having a trained skirt. Miss D. Barnes (Napier), deep blue velvet, having a cowl front neckline and coral pink taffeta sash. Miss J, Pattison, paie lemon georgette, fijwered in misty blue and pink. Mip Mary McHardy, silver grey chiffon, having narrow frills on the trained skirt and corsage. . Miss .fanet Groome, dainty dance frock in iee-blue embossed taffeta, the very full skirt edged with narrow cream lace and off-shoulder corsage drapings. Miss Shena White, scarlet and silver giey tree bark taffeta. Miss D. Blyth, pastel green georgette frock, sashed in re& Miss E. liitt, frock Jn scarlet ripple crepe, having a black satin sash and black velvet shoulder cape. Miss Shultz, blue ring velvet frock, having a silver girdle. # Miss E. Grover, slimly-fashioned gown in blue and silver ripple lame. Miss N. Mortimer- Jones, pretty dance frock in ruby net, having a very full skirt. Miss D. Ormond, white chiffon flowered in pink and "blue, having a squarecut neckline. Miss M. Milne, powder blue angelskin satin, having a pink corsage spray. Miss J". Hartland, wallis blue taffeta, having a kigh cut front neckline and wide strap at the back. Miss M. Anderson, black stiffened taffeta, having flared shoulder frills. Miss Bunty McHardy, ruby red lacquered satin, her tailored coatee having short puffed sleeves. Miss Joan Smyrk, blue silk net frock, having a very full skirt and narrow ruch on neckline. Miss D. Hunter, pastel bluo shirred taffeta fashioned with short puffed sleeves. Miss Peggy Hartland, slimly-fashion-ed frock in duek-egg green crepe, with a pink corsage spray. Miss P. Jefferd, deep red stiffened taffeta, having frills on neckline and (a silver ,belt. Miss Shand (Christchurch), cyclamen shot taffeta, fashioned on slim lines. Miss Hargaret Pattison, black chiffon, flowered in spring green, with a deep cape eifect at back. Miss Jean Hunter 7s frock was fashioned in deep and light blue patterned French crepe. Miss H. Cuthbort, misty bluo and pink flowered crepe on a cream background, with a long pink sash. Miss Para Wilder, cream chiffon, having a square-cut neckline and very full skirt. . Miss C. Williams, black taffeta, having handmade taffeta roses on corsage and frills on skirt. Miss Patricia Williams, paie pink net over a pink silk foundaticm and narrow frills on neckline. Miss Hutana, apricot silk lace over taffeta, having off-shoulder ruclied taf* fot frills. Miss Joan Whiti, paie pink and scarlet sprigged georgette over pink taffeta. Miss M. Stewart, lilac cloque, having ruchings on neckline and skirt.
