MOVE FOR EFFICIENCY

Progress League Constitution _ With a view to securing greater efficiency, a notiee of motion was tabled at the annual meeting of the Hastings and District Progress League by the president, Mr A. L Rainbow, last night proposing an alteration to the constitution by doing away with the general committee and enlarging the council, which would also .be given wider powors than it at present possesses. "The executive has felt that the present method of appoiniing a general committee, which in turn appoints an executive is too unwieldy," he said and pointed out that the general committee was composed of something like 50 or 60 people covering a very wide atea. He contended that it was Teally only as individuals that this committee was of any assistance to the league, for though two meetings of tlie committee had been called by notices the attendance had been very meagre. Under the amended constitution, he pointed out, the council would have the power to co-opt anyone it thought desirable as being particularly interested in any project or subject that the League had in hand. Disappo'intment at the attendance at the meeting was expressed by Mrs Sarah Jones, who pointed out that there were 250 mombers, but apparentiy no mterest was being taken in the league. "What is the good of carrying on at all," she said. "Why, the people should be jumping over themselves to do all they can to help the league and the developinent and progress of the town." Mr Eainbow pointed out that it was generally found that it was difficult to get a number of people together at meetings. "But we do Jtnow that when wft plaee beiore the people something delimte and ask their support and enthusiasm, we get it," he said.
