Successful Progress League Activities i/FFICERS ELECTED "Though there have been no fireworks, I think there have been very satisfactory resirlts shown for sucb o young leaguo and I feel that we have served some useful purpose," said Mr A. I. Rainbow, president of the Hastings and District Progress League, in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the League last night. Dealing briefly with the various matters mentioned in the annual report (previously published), Mr Rainbow said the past year's activities covered a considerable lofc of. ground and with a certain measure of flnancial success, It was very difficult actually to define what the activities of the league should be, but he felt that members and the townspeople generally could look back over tbe past year with no little measure of satisfaction. .He considered that the League had served as a valuable adjunct to , the town. Referring to the beautifying scheme in Karamu road, he agfreed that this had not been as great a success as was wished for, but there had been several unforeseen problems and difficulties. These had practically all been overcome, and it was hoped that very shortly something would be done to brighten up that portion of the townvery considerably. Another matter that had been given a good deal of consideration was the problem of car parking, and this question had also considerably exercised the minds of the Borough Council. However, if the representations to the Minister of Railways for a. new station and station site were successful, it vjas possible that some definite progres's could be made at an early date in this matter. Mr Rainbow paid a tribute to all those who had assisted the League, and particularly to the organisingi secretary, Mr €r. E. G. Rogers, for their wonderful work and scrvico, The election of officers resulted as follows: — Patron, Mr T. Mason Chambers i patroness, Mrs T. H. Lowry; president, Mr A. I. Rainbow; vicepresidents, Messrs W. E. Bate and A. F. Redgrave; executive committee, Mesdames Sarah Jones and D. W. Hursthouse, Messrs L. J. Fisher, A. C. A. Hyde, G. A. Maddison, H. Nel-son-Fowler and the Rev. D. J. A. Shaw; organising secretary, Mr G. E. G. Rogers ; hon. auditors, Messrs McCulloch, Butler and Spence.
