MR. HARRY GASSON

MAKOTUKU, Last Night. The passing of Mr Harry Gasson lias removed from our midst one of the pioneers of the district. Born in England 72 years ago, he was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs H. W. Gasson. He came to New Zealand when quite a boy. The family settled in this district and oue of the earliest experiences of deceased, at the age of 12, was the driving of a bullock team from the Wairarajxa to Papatu. He eventually obtained employment with the New Zealand Railways as a bridge builder, and assisted in building all the bridges in this district — both road and raii — and he continued to work for the Railway Department until a few years ago. The late Mr Gasson was a very prominent cricketer aEnd footballer in his early days. At the former.game he exceiled and he was one of the Makotutu team which player against an English touring team on a paddock now owned by Mr Schaare. Mr Gasson was' also a prominent member of the Sports Club and at each annual sports gathering acted as starter. Throughout the long years of their residence here both Mr and Mrs Gasson worked devoutly for everything that tended to the welfare of the township. Of a quiet, retiring disposition, he .was held in high esteem by all. ' He was also a highly respected member of the Ormondville Golf Olub. Left to mourn their loss are the widow, Miss Myra Gasson (daughter), Mr Rugby Gasson (son), Messrs Jim Kasson (Tauranga), Bert Gasson (Te Awamutu), Percy Gasson (Makotuku) (brothers), Mrs P. Beding field (Matamau) (sister), and Mrs J. Towers (sister of Mrs Gasson), to whom the district extends deep sympathy in their bereavement. The funeral took place at the Ormondville cemetery on Saturday aftei'noon and was very largely attended. Floral emblems were numerous and very beautiful. The Rev. Canon T. O. Oullwick conduGted the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers were : — Messrs Harry Brookes, Maurice Bedingiield, David Bedingfield, Allan Kittow, Stanley Kittow and VValter Leslie (nephews of deceased).
