Local Debaters on Socialism

(From I

WAIPUKURAU,, This Day. In their debate with the Hatuma l)ebating Society' s representatives at Hatuma last evening, a team representing the Waipukurau group of Toc H failed by a small margin of points to convince the judges "That socialism is in the best interests of humanity." The visiting team was led by Mr B. Johanson, whose Btatement of the case for a classless society was ably supported by Messrs C. R. Watson and R. Bmart. The home team, Messrs C. Tliomsen, G. Edgecombe and L. Cowan, came to light with some telling arguments on the negative side of the question, and took the judges' verdict, but with very few points in hand. The debate lasted for an hour and a half, and was heard by a moderatesized public audience, who were offered an opportunity to contribute to the the discussion, Mr A. Edgar being the only one to take part. After delivering thear verdict, each of the judges (Messrs £). W. Neild, F. J, JDunbar and C. M. Williamson) gave a short talk on various aspects of the art of debate. Q Dancing, a little singing and an informal supper concluded a very pleasant evening.
