(Received 20, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, July 19. In the Davis Cup doubles mateh between the United States and Germany Budge and Mako (United States) defeated von Cramm and Henkel (Germany), 4 — -6, 7 — 5, 8 — 6, 6—4. The doubles, on which it was believed the rujult of the tie would eventually depend, started at top speed. The Americans in the first set led 4 — 2, but 'the Germans then took four games, in a row for the set. Play continued at a terrific speed in the eecond set, with numerous brilliant short-range rallies. The games went with service to 3—3, and after Budge had dropped his service the Germans went ahead to g 3. The Americans then resorted to lobbing and made untakeable smashes from the returns. This enabled them to win four successive games for the set. The match in the third set was still fought out with the utmost vigoru and determinatxon. Tre Germans led 4—3, but the Americans took the set after some effeetive smashing by Mako. The Germans rattled up a 4 — 1 lead in the fourth set, but von Cramm then lost his accuraey owing to over-anxiety. Mako prodnced many fine services and clever passing drives, and Budge, who had not reacbed his usual heights, throughout the Temainder of the contest won his service to love, clinching the match with two aces.
