MAN SUFFERS FATAL INJURIES
Struck by Car While Walking Along Road ACCIDENT AT WAITANGI Struck by a motor-car while walking on the main Hastings-Napier road near the Waitangi bridge shortly after six o'cloek on Saturday night, Thomas William Humphreys, a teamster, of Waitangi, suff-ered injuries from which he died in the Hastings Soldiers' Memoriai Hospital, 24 hours later. It was raining heavily at the time of the aeeident, and visibility was poor. Mr. Humphreys was walking on the side of the road between the two new bridges near the mouth of the Tutae kuri river when he was struck by a car driven by Mr. Dudley Robert Petrowskie, of Ellison road, Hastings, who was proceoding in tho direction of Napier. Mr. Humphreys was throwu heavily to the ground and suffered a fractured skull and laeeration of the 1 brain. He was taken to the hospital by a passing- car, as that of Mr. Petrowskie had brolcen down as a result of the accident. His condition wa's regarded as critical when he was admitted, and he passed away at six o 'clock last night. As far as is known, Mr. Humphreys was a bachelor, residiug normally at Bay View, but he had been engaged as a teamster by Mr. T. Macken on the river diversion work at Waitangi and had been camping- in that viciuity for some time/ At an inquest this morning conducted by the coroner, Mr George Ebbett, evideuce of identification was given by Mr Malcen, after which the proceedings were adjourned sine die.
