Nieholls, O.B.E., D.S.O., officer commanding the Snutliern Military Comxriand^ has retirod fr om that position on superannuation. He will be sticceeded by Colonel P H. Bell, D.S.O., who formerly held Ihe appointment of general staff officer, Central Military Command. Mr P. R. McMahon, son of Mr and Mrs J. McMahon, Linton, has heen gianted his Ph.H., after extensive wot'k on wool l'eseareh at Leeds tJnivei'Sity. He Was a student at ■ Massey Agriculture College fi'onx 1931 to 1933, in which year he graduated M.Agr.Se. He went to Leeds University dn 1935 after winning the Macmillan Brown Scholarship.

Mr Frank R. Lloyd, who has heen bandmastei' of the Napier Technicai Memorial Band for severai years, iias been compelled for health reasons to resign that paSition, Mr Lloyd has been actively interested. in the hand sinee its forma'tion in 1929, steppihg into the conductorship in 1931 upott the l-etirement of the late Mr F. Hop^ kinson. Mr Lloyd very enthusxastically took np the reins, and his capabilities were proved when, in the band contests held in conjunetion with the Napier carnival celebrationB early in 1933, the Technicai Band gained seeond place out of the five bands in the G grade. The band has appointed Mr George Jensen as its new conductor. Mr Jen. sen has had considerable band experience. He served in the Wanganui Garrison Baxxd for 25 years, conducted the Marton Band for three years, and was solo euphoixium player in the Napier Citizens' Band for two years and in the Hastings Citizens' Band for tlxree years.
