operations In HospitaL Forty-three operations were performed at ; the Waipukurau District Hospital during the past month. Eleven were major and 32 minor. Donations Received. Th© following donations of books were acknowledged by the matron, of the Waipukurau District Hospital at the monthly meeting of the Waipawa Hospital Board on Wednesday: — M*», G. Williams, Otane; Mrs. H. W. White, Porangahau; Mrs. H. Hobson, Hatuma; Mrs. J. Thorburn, Waipukurau.
Table Tennls Tournoy. On Wednesday evening a very successful Yankee table tennis tournament was held in the Masonic Hall, "Waipukurau, to augment the funds of the Central Hawke's Bay Rugby SubUnion's town Queen, Miss Shirley Clay. Three tables were in play during the evening, most oi the games being keenly contested. Mrs C. Schroder and Dr. W. B. Fisher were the wijraers. The dainty supper served was much'appreciated by the players. Band Offlcers Elected. A meeting of the Waipukurau Municipal Band was held to pass a forma) Tesolution altering the name of the band from "town" to "municipal. " This change necessitated an election of officers, which resulted as follows: — • President, Mr. W. A. Chambers; vicepresident, Mr. J. W. Harding; seeretary, Mr. E. R. Perkins; drum-major, left vacant in the meantime; sergeant, Mr. T. Denne, junr.; corporal-librarian, Mr. N. Addis; lance-corporal-custodian,. Mr., C. Woods; treasurer, Mr. F. Watson, domestic committee,MessTs. J. White, J. Russell, T. W. Walker, with the conductor, seeretary and treasurer; band committee, Messrs. J. White, J. Russell, T. W. Walker, seeretary, treashrer, and three borough council appointees.
Ongaonga Debating' Society. There was a good attendance of the Ongaonga Society 's debate, the subject being, "Should New Zealand adopt as vigorous ' immigration scheme?" Ex-' cellent arguments were put forth by both sides, the decision being in favour of the affirmative side supported by Mr. E. Bibby and Miss Weniham, whilo Mr. Keen and Mr. C. Harris dealt with the negative aspect. , It was decided thai the next meeting on August 2 should take the form more or less of an irnpromptu debate — subjects to be sut>mitted and thrown open to debate, the nominator in each case being asked to speak at some time during the diseusfiion. A very onjoyable evening closea with a vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr. B. Harris Queen Carnlval. A meeting of- the central executive committee coutrolling the Central Hawke's Bay Rugby Sub-Union's queen carnival was held on Tuesday night. Concerning the final count, to be made on September 1, it was decided that each queen committee be permitted to hold a function in its own district on .that night. On that evening counts will be made at 8.30, 9.0, 9.30, 10.0, and iinally at 10,30 p.m. Other business dealt with by the committee included decisions that money could be paid in at any time before the closing date and iu any am-ount, thcre being no minimum. -It was agreed that the crowning ceremouy be held in whatever district the committee of the successful queen desires, and a reeomniendation' to this committee will be that" the corouation talce placo not sooner than seven days aud not later than 14 days after the fina' count. Hospital Finances. 1 The report of the Finance Committee presented to the Waipawa Hospital Board at its- monthly meeting showed that the general account was £665 17/2 in bedit. The chairman, Mr "W. H. Rathbone, remarked that this was the first timo the accqunt had been in debit i'or about 10 years. Costs were rising ' phenomeuaily, and where it was all going to end he did not know. The prices of all comiliodities used in the hospital liad increased, the salaries had been heavily increased, the staff increased, and the working hours had been decreased. He knew of another local body in the neighbourhood that was facing a debit, something it had never experi-
enced before. It was very disheartening to he a member of a local body that showed a debit after the members for so many years had been most thorough in controlling the finances. Sanatorlum Farm Actlvitieo. In hi* report to th® Waipawa Hospital Board, Mr W. Ferguson, manager of the sanatorium farm, stated that enough mjlk was being obtained from the cows to supply the institution, none having been bought during the month. Supplies of mea/b, milk, cream and potatoes to the value of £124 7/7 had been delivered at the institution, and supplies of pigs, sheepskins and calfskins sold to other sources had reailised £33 1/3. '
