Report on Past Season's Activities
(From
WAIPUKURAU Laat Night. Following is the annnal report of tho Waipukurau Bowling Club submitteff to members at the annual meeting held last night: — s The balanca-aheet discloseis a deerease in the overdraft by £12, and the assets show an increaee of approximately £2.7. The membership reached a total of 65, a small increase on the previous year. The green opened in very fair condition, but the intensive work carided out in the previous autumn was somewhat nullified by the very dry . spring and other conditions, making it impoesible for our green superintendent to fully carry out his top-dressing plans. In parfcicular, the treatment of the small green had to be abandoned, and the green was unfortunately out of play practically throughout the season. The desirability of bringing this green to good playing cohdition, however, in order to relieve pressure on and conserve tho large green, is not being lost sight of. The large green, however, was maintained throughout in very fair condition, thanks to the efforts of Messrs. H. A. Martin and E. Barnes, and it is hoped the full beneiits of the work previously carried out will reaeh maturity for the coming season. The season again proved disappointing from. a weather point of view, and unseasonable conditions prevailed throughout the greater part of the playing period. Having passed through two consecutive yeans of unfavourable weather conditions. it is sincerely to be hoped the coming season will prove more equitable. Competitions. Perhaps weather conditions was the greatest factor in marring the progress of club competitions. However, with the exception of the Colts singles, which had again to be abandoned, competitions were pushed through with difficulty to finality. The following are the results: — Champion singles (Matt. McGrath Memorial Cup), F. Barfield; runner-up, H. E. Hepburn. Champion pairs: J. Skidmore and F. Burfield; mnners-up, C. Ewen and A. M. /White. Handicap singles (Arthur Moore 'Memorial Cup): E. G. Reckin. -Yeterans' singles (Skidmore Memorial Cup): H. Beachen. The Harper Feathers, both pairs and colts singles, were not contested quite so energetically as last year. The Central Hawke's Bay Buttons provided rink compelition within tho club on Saturdaya throughout the season, Waipawa unfortunately having decidcd not to compete in this competi— tion during the season. In other inter-club competitions we were unsuccessful on all counts. The Dillon Shield was lost to Waipawa, tho Hawke's Bay Centre Shield was lost to Hastings, and the Centre .rinks, pairs, and singles championships, also the J. P. Smith Cup were unsuccessfully competed for. Our nearest approach to success was in the Centre Shield competition^ where we- succeeded in readiing second place. Our sole selector, Mr. Clarkson, was fully ejctended in providing balaneed rinks in this competition, in view of the provisions requiring the pluyig of SO per cent. of clubs' available players. Actually over 90 per cent. of our Saturday players were fielded, so that the position attained refleeted great credit on the selector. Our congratulations are extended to the various winners, particularly Waipawa on their numerous successes. It is with very deep regret that I kave to record the sudden passing during the season of a very old and esteerned mcniber and past-president, Mr. Jbun Butler. I also regrct to record that ;ll-health prevented Mr. A. Rood from playing throughout the season, also Mr. H. Keir, due to his severe accidenl, and Messrs. Ambrose and Lowes havo been forced by failing health to rolinquish active membership. We also lost an enthusiastic and popular meniber in Mr. L. R. Cutforth, vice-president and past seeretary, who was transferred to Tauranga towards the end of the season. In conciusion, I wish to extend my hearty thanks for the support and assistonco given me by the members of the executive, and all members of the club who thus made my terip. of office a very pleasant one.
