Sonte time ago the Waipawa Hoapital Board mado application for a Go-rern-ment grant of £3,000 in order to carry out work at the Pukoora Sanatorium. The application was not successful, but the board understood that it was to receive £1750. No definite advice has yet been reeeived, however, and the board at its meeting yesterday decided to write to the Director-Gen-eral of Health asking him whether he could state when the grant would be made. Mr Hawthorn said that Dr Anderson, medical snperintendent of the Sanatorium, was working under extreme difficulty, the institution having a record number Of patients. Apart from accommodation, there were many things crying out to be done. He eonsidered that the board should aga^in write to thg Department, pointing out the record number of patients and the extreme difficultiea under which the staflc were working. The board could atso point out the faet that its genOral account was in debit. The board was conducting the institution for tho Health Departmeut and it was not fair that it should be asked to try to keep the staff and patients satisfied witbout anything being done. The chairman, Mr W. H. Rathbone, said that the matter had not been lost sighfc of. Though the deputation which interviewed the Minister last November had not got a definite answer he understood that the Department had reeommended the Treasury to pass the amount. Why it was being held -up he did not know. The board had all its plans and specifications ready to call for tenders at any moment as sdon as advice had been reeeived that money was comihg to hand.
