PROGRESS LEAGUE'S YEAR
Review of Activities by President MUCH ACCOMPLISHED The work which has been accomplished by the Hastings and District Progresa League during the past year is xeviewed as follows by the .president, Mr. A. I. Rainbow, in his annual report to be presented to the annual meeting on Tuesday next: — Membership. — The total membership of the league ds now 250, which includes all affiliated organisations. " Entertainment of Dairy Conferencc Delegates. — In June last year your executive sponsored a fair to entertain the visiting delegates to the Dairy Conferenee. The Hon. W. Nash, Minifcter of .Finance, opened the fair. which was successful both from a financial and entertaining point of view. The cooperation of a number of Hastings businessmen, several women 's organisations and the Keturned Soldiers' Association contributed an a very large measure to the success of the function. "Beautifying Karamu Road. — Last winter your executive, in co-operation with the Hawke's Bay County Council and the Superintendent of Reservea to the Hastings Borough Council, arranged for the planfcing of shrubs opposite the Showgrounds in Karamu road. The types of shrubs planted gave occasion for some public criticism. The exceptionally dry autumn has been responsible for the destrruction of a large number of these shrubs, and your executive recommends that tho shrubs be replaced during the present season. ' ' Competition for Best Kept Garden. — It is regretted that efforts to obtain a ruling from the Hortieultural Society wiith regard to rules for a competition for the best-kept garden in Hastings have proved unsuccessfulfc. It is recommended, however, that the' iucoming executive should Sponsor this competation irrespectivo of other organisations. ® Parking of Cars, " Car-Parking. — The question of carparking was considered by a sub-coin mittee which recommended that cars should be allowed to park in' Heretaunga street, but that the traffie raspector should exerciso tact in enforcing the time-limit for parking. "Model Aero Club. — Your executive assisted the- Modcl Aero Club in the promotion of an exhibition of inodel aeroplanes and attended the opening ceremon^f of the exhibition. "Tourist Department. — The matter of publdcity for the Hastings Tourist Bureau was taken up with the chief officer of the Tourist Department and resultod in additional facilities for publicity. "Empire Trade Week.— With the consent of the Hastings Retailers' Assocaation the Empire Trade Week in Hastings during 1936 was sponsored by the league. Posters were distributed and prizes were given for the bestdreesed windows in eaeh block in the town. "Bathing Belle Competition.— At the request of the Napier -Thirty Thousand Club your executive decdded to cooperate with Waipawa, Napier and Gisborne in the organising of a Hawke's Bay Balhing Belle Competition which was run in conjunction with a £50 artunion. The competition was conducted on the queen carntval system and thec following local organisations sponsored their respective queens: (1) Combined Sports Queen, the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association, Heretaunga Swiinming Club, Mahora Swimming Club; (2) Combined Tennis Queen, West End Tennis Club, Hastings Tennis Club, Parkvale Tennis Club. Havelock North Tennis Club; (3) Band Queen, Hastings Citizens' Band; (4) JBoxing Queen, Hastings, Amateur Boxing Association. The opening function was promoted by the league as the Municipal Theatre for the purpose of introdueing the respective queens, who Were presented to the public by the. Hon. W. Lee Martin. In addition a beach fair was organised in aid of the funds of the four queens. The league conducted the advertisir.g and generally controlled the competition. It ds pleasing to report that Hastings raised a iarger sum of mouey than any other of the compoting towns and not less than £1000 was distributed ainong the organisations concerned, Becent Celebrations. "Coronation aqd Hastings Borough Jubilee Celebrations. — Your executive conferred with the Hastings Borough Council in connection with the Hastings Borough Jubilee and Coronation celebrations, and as the reeult your president and the seeretary were appointed delegates to co-operate - with 'iiis Worship the Mayor and Town Clerk tb • bring down suggestions for these celebrations. Your seeretary co-operated with the Town Clerk in the organisation of the celebrations, which were financed by the Bordugh Council. "East Coast Booklet. — Your executive met membera of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce in connection with the publication of an East Coaet Booklet setting out the scenic beauties of the East Coast of the North lslaud. In addition to assisting with the details of the publication iinancial assis* tance was given to the project. "Elimination of B liadio Stations. — Aa the result of representationj from Hastings listeners your executive urged his Worship the Mayor to call a public meeting to protest at the suggested action of. the Government in clos'.ng local B Stations. Assistance was given in organising the meeting as tho result of which a resolution and petition were forwarded to the Minister of Broadeastiug. Accounts and Balance Sheet. — A Slatenient of income and expenditure and balance sheet as at March 31, 1037, is submitted. In accordanee with the original intention, the league has been self-supporting duri"hg the past year, and it is with pleasure that your executive reports that the accumulated fund of £142 9/5 has been dnci^ased by £206 5/1 during the year. ' The league now has a sum of £30o lodged in the Post Office Savings Bank Ac.count and £48 14/6 at the bank. the Mayor, the Borough Council, all local organisations and sports bodies for the whole-hearted support and cooperation, to the management of the Herald-Tribune for the publicity given to the league 's functions and meetings and for thedr co-operation - and ' assistance; to the many firms and reeidents for their generous assistance and to the members of the league for their loyal support. "In conclusion I feel sure that tho members of the committee would wish me to pay tribute to the work of the organising seeretary, Mr. Rogers, during the past year. He entered into all his duties with enthusiasin. and this, combined with hie organising ability and eflicicncy, has been, I feel, one of the inain fac'tors in the success of the league 's work for the year which has jast passed."
