Mr E. L. Gullen, M.P., left Hastinge this morning on a brief tour of the northern portions of his constituency. Mr and Mrs C. Affleck, of Otautau, Southland, who have been visiting Hastings, returned south by the mail train this morning. Mr and Mrs E. Brooke Taylor, who have been visiting Hastings and staying with Mr and Mrs A. Brooke Taylor, left for Auckland on Tuesday by car. Canon and Mrs W. G. Williams, Napier, arrived at» Wellington by car last night and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Ernest Hadfield, Hill street, during Synod. Mr. J. E. McHwaine, M.R.C.V.S., disrict superintendent of the LiveStoek Division of the Department of Agriculture at Wellington, is on a visit to Hawke's Bay. Mr C. E. Critchley, Australian Trade Oomxnissioner in the Netherlands East Indies, has been appointed Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand. — Press Association. Mr N. Gordon, of Christchurch, Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Orange Lodge, who has been on a visit to the Hawke 's Bay lodges of the order, left Hastings by the mail train this morning for Wellington. Mr. W. Balch, Christchurch, was presented with the Cockayne Memorial gold medal for the best diploma student of 1936, by the district president, Mr. J. A. McPherson, at a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand lnstitute of Horticulture. Mr. Balch, a trainee of the Christchurch Botanie Gardens, is the first Christchurch resident to win the medal. ' •Mr. Alan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S., formerly veterinarian at the Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln, has been appointed veterinary officer to the Federation of Taranaki Dairy Factories. This as the first appointment of this type made by the federation and is the first step in the organisation of a eoinplete system of veterinary service for Taranaki. Mr. Leslie will take up his new duties next week, being stationed at Eltham.
