Governor-General On Migration SMALL-HOLDING PLAN

WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Dominion conference of the Fanners' TTnion was opened this morning by the Governor-General, Lord Galv/ay In a brief reference to immigraugji he said that something would have to 1 e done if the Dominion were to develop and reach real prosperity, and he discusaed the possibility of developing waste lands into small holdings where young couples could mahe a living. He referred to the importance of agri eultural and pastoral activities to the Dominions as a wliole and to several of the problems facing farmers as n rotional body. Speaking of the value o.f research work in agriculture, he said he was sure that the work being done in connection with the growing of wheat would lead to the discovery of the right types for the diflorent !!■» tricts. He also referred to the proper care and feeding of dogs. If thia wero at* tended to and an attempt were made to 6tamp out hydatids, it would help to remove what was a great disgrace to New Zealand, he said. He also Teferred to the need for eliminating noxious weeds. Tho Minister ofAgriculture addrcss* ed the gathering and then the president, Mr. Mullholland, delivered an address, at the conclusion of which Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., said he was satis* iied that the case for the farmers had never been more clearly stated. He moved a motion of thanks to the president which was carriod with acclama* tion.
