BUTTER BOXES
New Timbers on Trial at Sydney (Beceived 15, 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 14. . Trials with. hemloek and hoop pine timbers for butter boxes , which hiave been carried out under the auspices of the department of- agriculture here, have proved most useful. The official report on. the subject Says that the butter experimented with was packed under departmental inspection at the Wingham factory and since then has been /in cold storage for two months. • The report deals with tho method of treating ■ the boxes with sprays of casein and formalin, after which they are lined with triplo foil aluminium parchment and cardbOard. The chief conelusion arrived at by the examiners was that the surface of all butter so packed was free from wood taint, exeept where wet papering was rcsorted to and there was very definite evidence of the value of triplo foil parchment in preventing both surface tiant and the deepening of the surface colour of the butter. It was emphasised that dry papering gave the. best results, while the proper selection of timber was as essentktl as satisfactory spMjdng.
