MID-WEEK GAMES

"Sticks"),

Pirates Retain Lead in Competition REVIEW OF THE PLAY

(By

The second round in the Hastings mid-week hockey competition was advanced another stage last Thursday in ideal weather. The grounds were very bumpy after the continual use while so soft the previous Saturday. Nevertheless the games were very interesting and some good hockey was witnessed. Pirates retained their lead in , the competition by defeating their nearest rivals, United Gold, by four to two. Huia retained their position of second place by defeating Karori by five goals to one. Waimarama scored 13 goals against United White 's three, and could have made it more if they had so desired. In the junior grade, Pirates gained a win over Karori, which is the first game the latter team have lost this season, the flnal score being one goal to nil. At the High School grounds the school team gained a three-to-one victory over United Blue. Paxagraphs. Pirates sprang a Surprise on United Gold, when, froax the initial bully, the ball was hit through the Gold full-back, and MacDonald, coming tbrough fast from the inside left position, robbed the back of the ball and went tlxrouglx °to score an easy goal, When McNab came up into the forward line in the second half, it put an entirely different outlook on the game. The two goals scored by United Gold were the result of good play on this player's part. W. Boyle United Gold) is a decided asset to his team. He was a source of annoyance to the Pirate forwards. His stopping and clearing was brilliant. J. Barden (Pirates) is a real battler, and an ideal half. He plays up to his forwards and keeps feeding them, and when play swings back toward his own goal he always seems to be there, and inore times than not, sends the ball back. Although the score of iive to one suggests a deflnite superiority, such was not the case in the game between Huia and Karori. The game was very ciosely contested and a one-goal margin in favour of Huia would have btTen a Detter indication of the ga/me. E. Shuker is a hard worker for Karori, and his goal was a reward for persistent toiling. He was in everytbing. J.t was pleasing to see Old faces in the Karori team. C. Taylor and .T. Green turned out after a long absenco from the game, and both played excellent hockey. Bernard (Pirates juniors) is an ideal centre half, and was in no small way responsible for his team *s success last, week. He was here, there and ^*^rywhere,
