WEIGHT RESTRICTION
What it Would Meait to Sheep-Carriers COUNTY'S DEClSION Ihe rigid imposition of weighb t estrictions on lorries engaged in the carrymg of sheep would result in greatly increased transport costs for fainiers and would place a gtOater burden upon roads thaii is boffie at priaefit. This conclUsiOn bdcaiue clear as a result of a diseussion at^yestei'day,S taeOting of the Hawke's Bay County OCUhcil. A letter on the subject was received from the Hawke's Bay Carriere' Aesociation. It was urged that the Crate should be exolusive of the taro of the lOrry* otherwise there would be a definitO restriotion upon the number of stOck carried per load. . Mr S. M. Palmer said that the im- . position of the restriction would result in at least 30 to 40 fewer sheep being carried per trip, and to the farwer this was a very importaiit matter. On fche average season it was compnted that to carry on under the restriction would .be increasing the mileagje by 3000 to 4000 miles. "The damage to ihe roads would be greater by the increased mileage tban by tbe additional weigbt of the crate," he said. "And that is a point that ihe County Council has to consider first." After a brief diseussion in which several members expressed their sympathy with the suggestion, it was decided that the restriciton would not be imposed in as far as the Hawke's Bay : County CounGil was concerned.
