BLENHEIM, This Day. Addressing the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court 6essions Ihis morning, the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, alluded to the dncreased number of criminal charges, "I do not Lnow that this shotild give you any special cause for alarm, however, for after all, the volume of work is not more than might reasonably be expeeted from a district of this si^e, ' ' he said. Five criminal charges were referred to the Grand Jury, one concerning alleged cattle-stealing and one alleged sheep-stealing, two ox carnal knowledge, one of assault and causing actual bodilv harm. A true bill was returned in the case against a young man% Lewis John William Tuckerman, op two charges of carnal knowledge at Renwick. The Grand Jury returned no-bills against George feutland Hart, Canvastown farmer on a chargie of theft of sheep and William Bell O'Callaghan, alleged indecent ofiFence on a male, and added a rider commending the police on the action they had taken on the sheep-stealirlg allegation, realising tbat the matter was a serious one in pastoral districts. True bills were returned in the cases of Henry William Smith and Leslie Wilson, botel employees, of Picton, charged separately with assaulting Charles Herbert Brogden, hote] eook, of Picton, and also with assatilfcing Brogden so as to cause actual bodily harm. A true bill was also returned in tbe case against Leonard Alma Turner, farmer, of Tinline, Pelorus district, who is charged Vith the theft of cattle.
