Brain Tumor The Cause of Death OPERATION FAILS (Received 12, 1.55 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, July 11. George Gershwin, aged 38, died in hospital five hours after an operation for the removal of a brain tumor. Although Dr. Dandy, the Jahns Hopkins brain specialist, was hurrying here by aeroplane from Maryland, two local surgeons were forced to operate before his arrival when the composer's condition became critical. Gershwin collapsed two weeks ago in the Samuel Goldwyn studios while preparing nine compositions for the Goldwyn ' ' Follies Cinema," fiye of which were completed. The, news of his death shocked Unit* ed States musical circles. Many state* ments of sorrow, pointing out that he died in the prime of his life and at the peak of his career were received. Gershwin 's most famous composi* tions were "Rhapsody In Blue" and "An American In Paris."
