NAPIER TOWNSWOMEN'S GARDENING SECTION

The July meeting of the gardening section of the Napier Townswomen's Guild was held in St. John's Schoolroom * 011 Thursday, Mrs. Pegram presiding over a good attendance of members. New members and visitors were weicomed and section notices announeed. An invitation was received from. the "Wanganui Townswomen's Guild to be present at their second birthday paffty. About 24 members of the section signified their intention of accepting the Hastings Townswomen's Guild's invitation to their meeting on July 19. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Drummond, who cleverly demonstrated the making of a ball of flowers and a marzipan bouquett all meniibers Ueenly following the process. The ball of violets was later presented to Mi£. Orr. The July competitions were most popular, there being yery good entries. Miss Walker kindly acted as judge, placingjs being as follow: — Basket of spring flowers, Mrs. F. R. Lee 1, Mrs. Harris 2, Mrs. Briarly 3. Arranged vase of violets, Mrs. 0. Coraer 1, Mrs. Magill 2, Miss Hannay 3. . Shoulder spray, Mrs. C. C.orner 1, Mrs. Pegram 2, Mrs. Briarly 3. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Drummond for her interesting demonstrations, and Miss Walker for her judging and helpful remarks on the entries. Afternoon tea proved very popular, and at its eonclusion a very interesting competition, ^Flowers," arranged by Mrs, Magill and won by Mrs. Briarly, closed another very happy afternoon, The competitions for Augaist were arranged as follow: — "A ball oi flowers," "a bowl of Iceland Poppies" and ''the best flower in the garden." A demonstration of the making of a wire basket will be given by Mrs. Pegram , while the gardening section oi me Hastings Townswomen's Guild will demonstrate the arrangement of a bridal sheaf and a layer bowl. A very enjoyable evening was spent on. Tuesday by the music cirele, when a large number of members were present. Mrs J. A. Ito'sewane presided. Owing to the girls from Hukarere College being on holiday the Maori music programme which should liave been given, was poKtponed indefinitely. The orchestra, under the leadership of Mrs A, W, Dowling, gave two very enjoyable iteins — "Barcarole," from Tales of Hotfman, and "Salut d'Amour," b/ Llgar. Mrs Nixon rendered the solo, "I'e Powers tTuat DwelJ Below , ' ' afler which Mrs Dowling delighted the audience with two violin solos, Bach-Uoiinod's "Ave Maria," and "Sonveuier", Mrs Rotsewano gave a talk on music and pjusical societies in Napier diiring the lasfc two or three flecadea. A very iuteresting letter qti the siibjept was read, wrifteii by Mr H. HBpaekman, of Hastings, Mr Spackman is a very old reeident of Napier, and his ability in the mqsical world is well known. A ehat over supper and the singing of the National Anthem brought a very delighiti'ul evening to a close.
