CAVALRY REMOUNTS
High Service Fees a Bar to Breeding A. AND P. 0PINI0NS Tho high fees for the services of sires wero considered to be the chief reason against the more extensive breeding of horses at to-day 's meeting of the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society, when the question of breeding horses suitable for remounts was being considered. Mr R. H. Tod was of the opinion that as praotically all units in the army had been mechanised there was little need for horses for remounts. "You can't get on without them,'' remarked a member. "Kot in England, I agree;- but in New Zealand we are too far away," replied Mr Tod. The Hon. H. A. Russell, in disagreemg with Mr Tod, said that the breeding ot remounts as a reserve would enabla the Government to lay its hands on suitable horses should thev be required. ' Although the army was largely mechanised, it would never be able to do without horses. Mr J. W. Livingstone explained that after the South African War the Government iinport&d a number of sires for the breeding of suitable horses. "lf the Government would fiud .the sires the farmers would soon get the mares," said Mr C. E. Twist. "It is the high fees that is standing in the way of breeding horses." The question of breeding remounts was then referrcd to a committee consisting of Sir Andrew Russell, the Hon. JH. A. Russell, Mr Johu Russell aud Mr J. H. Macuiveu.
