Scheme for Christchurch Sustenance Men

CHRISTCHUBCH, Last Night. About 860 men in Christchurch now ju sustenance are within the nest yeai to be offered full-time employment &t standard rates of pay by local bodies in and round the city. They will be em» ployed for five days wcekly, for periods rangmg from two inonths to four montils in accordance with the schomc reccntly outlined by the Aoting-Minister oi' Labour (Hon. P. 0. Wobb). This was announced to*night by Mr. \V. Bromley, liaison ofiicCr attached to the cmployment division of the Dcpartment of Labour, .who met representatives of local bodies to-day and explained the scheme to them. About onethird of the number will begin Worx soon and whcn thia group has compieted its perlod of full-time work it will roturn to part-time work or sustenance and anOthor group wiJl then be absorbcd. Local bodies who have agreed to Lako part in tho scheme include the Christchurch City Council, the Paparua, Heathcote, Halswell and Waimairi County Councils, New Brighton and Sumner Borough Couueils, Canterburyi Education Botml, Cliribtchurch Drainage | Board and Wai makariri Kiver Trust.
