Matiers Discussed by Hastings Council ITEMS FROM AGENDA The monthly meeting of tbs Hastings Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, presiding over Ci's. A. I. Kainbow, S. J. Mc« J£ce, S. Ashcroft, C. H. Slater, T. Falconer, P. M. Cohr, P. Loach. and T. Dobson. Leave of absence Was granted Cr. G. W. B. McCormick. # # * The Hastings Citizens ' Band asked if the council intended holding public celebrations of the jubilee of the town, along with the band. The information was desired so that the conductoi could have the band ready for the occasion. It was decided to refer the matter to the Hastings and Distriet Progress League, # 4 * The question of boundary lighting charges is to reeelve the consideration of the council, it being contended that as the Council and Hawke's Bay Couucy Council are jointly responsible for uie upkeep of the oounaary J roads, thon they should Do jointly 'responiiole for the lighting cost. E. O. Carreil) reported that last. inonth 80 residences Were inspected, Under the Housing Survey, making the total to' date 85. The south ward is compieted and fhe east ward is now being surveyed. Only sinall defects are being found. • * * Two cases of infectious diseases were reported to the Hastings Borough C'ouneil last month and consisted of: — One case of Poliomyeiitis and one of diphtheria. 4 * * The Traffic Inspector, Mr P. Mann, tested 31 applicants for drivers' licen-> ses last month and four failed. 4 4 4 Eighty residences were inspected by tho Assistant-Nuisance Inspector, Mr H. A. Green, last month for ieaky taps, overhanging hedges and trees, noxious weeds aiid uni'egistered dogs. As a result 46 notices were sent out. • • • The registered "dog population" in Hastings is now 876, an ancrease of 100 dnring the month.- "Bates" paid on their behalf amount to £325 6/-. *44. Accounts amounting to £7746 15/2 were passed for payment. 4 4 4 Arrears in rates at the end of last month amounted to £1857 12/10. 4 4 4 There are now 1535 aduit and 537 juvenile subscribers to the Public Library. Last month 320 new books were added to tho shelves and £83 10/- was Dankcd.
