LEICESTER STARTS WELL

Easy Pitch Makes N.Z. Bowlers' Task Hard THREE FOR 439 (From tbe Special Correspondent of the (Jnited Freas Aasociation with the Taam.) (Received 8, 11.0 a.m.) LEICESTER, July 7. The wieket. was in good order for the match against Leicestershire. Berry and Prentice establisbed a record firstwicket partnership against N.ew Zealand in England, scoring 205 togethe? beating Hobbs and Sutclilfe at Scarborough in 1931, when they both also scored eenturies. Berry and Prentice. also made the record stand of the present tour. eclipsing Hammond and Hardstafi's score of 245 in the test. Conditions were overwhelmingly ia lavour of the batsmen. The wicket was the easiest imagjinable and the outfield was exceptionally fast. Moreqver, luck was against the tourists. Berry, in the early part of his innifigs played Roberts against the stumps without removing the bail and thrice survived leg beiore appeals by Cowie. Nevertheless tlje batting was unenterprising, although .the score quickened after lunch till the dismissal of the first pair when it slackened so much that the players were often barracked. The lunch score was no wickets for 104. The New Zealand bowling was uniforxnly steady and the fielding was enthusiastic. Tindill did not concede a bye until well into the afternoon. The score at tea read : two for 293, (Prentice 123, Berry 156). The attendance was about 1000. A good crowd will probably attend tomorrow which is a half-holiday in Leicester. A novelty was the playing oi popular airs over loud-speakers to eutertain the spectatorg during the^intervals. : The New Zealanders were guects at lunch of Sir Frederick Oliver, president of. the Leicestershire Club. To-morrow, evening the team will attend a flying exhibition at the invitation of Mr Lindsay Everald at a private aerodrome at Ratcliffe. The New Zealand team is: Vivian, Moloney, Wallace, Kerr, Hadlee, Lamason, Tindill, Donnelly, Cowie, Gallichan,. Roberts. Scores : — LEICESTER. , .
