Highway Maintenance and Improvements

WAIPUKURAU. This Day. Good work has been carried out duriu othe past month by the outside staff ing the past month by the outside stuif highway maintenance .and improvement. A summary of the work is contained in the monthly report of the engineer, Mr. R. B. Price, adopted at Saturday's meeting of the council. It reads as follows: — Hatuma riding.. — General work haa been carried out on riding roads during the month and where shoulders have been removed by the grader several short culverts have been lengthened. The recent rains have caused many sections of road to become more or less rough and these are being attended to by the council's trucks. The Hatuma highway has been patched and is in fair order. The grader worked six days on riding roads and three on main higbways. Three short sections of the Lower Gorge road will be metalled next week after more important work elseivhere ig done. Mt. Herbert riding. — Five and a-half days were occupied overhauling the Mangatarata Hill road and a fair quantity of spoil was removed. There are etill a few short sections on this road to be metalled, but these will receive attention as time permits. Several short culverts have also been lengthened in this riding. Trucks are at present engaged in metalling the unsealed portion of the Porangahau road, which is in a bad way due to the recent wet weather. The grader has worked seven days on riding roads and two on main highways raking in shingle and removing shoulders. Purimu riding.... — The roads in this riding have suffered considerably during the past two weeks, but it is hoped t.o begin a metalling programme on the more important roads during the comiug month. Minor slips and a subsidence on Tourere-Whetukura road have received attention.
