QUEEN ELIZABETH'S FAN OF OSTRICH PLUMES

There seems to be a £uikl for almost cvery craft in London, and the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers is, excepb for the Guild of Master Mariners, the youngest of theru all. Queen Anne bestowed its churter. The Fan Makers possess no hall of their own, but depend for hospitality on otliei guilds when they hoid their quarteny meetings or wisli to make merry. They do, hovvever, really justify their existence when a Queen is crowned, and 011 the occasion of Queen Mary's Covo- ' nation they presented her with au exquisite fan made of Honiton lace, with th'e Royal Arms worked into the iutricate design. Jt took four months to make, and was a triumph of the fanmaker's craft. Another equally lovely gift has been made for Queen Elizabetk. It is composed entirely of prime white ostrich feathers. More than a liundred buudles of these gracoful plumes were examined in South Africa before suitable ones i were selected, and the result of this careful choice is a. perfect fan. The sticks are of finesfc West Indian' tortoiseshell, in a palo lemon tint, with I her Majesty's Royal Crown and Cipher l I on -the front, and the company's crest, i in gold, on the back. The whole ex- [ 1 quisite creation is fiuished otf with a } loop of gold and a pin rivefc studded j with a diamond at each end.
