Fight with Slasher and Shotgun

* " DUNEDIN, Last Night. f M K reiolt of the fracas at the kaik at Moeraki on Friaay night two Mauri bxothers. named Eli and Fuller Porete were eeverely injured, necessitating their removai to the Oamaru Bablic HospitaL Eli Porete is suffering from a deep gash on the head, a cut jon ihe forehead and a fxactured arm, land Fuller Porete from a severe cut on jthe head, a «at on the f oot and had two jfingers *o severely slashed as to require jtheir amputation. Both men are projgressing satisfaetorily in hospitaL It la alleged that as a result of an isltercation between Eli Porete and his ihousekeeper the woman left his place |*nd went to his brother's. Later the hvoman retnrned and flnding .the house •vacant removed a quantity of bedding and clothing to Pulier Porete 'a house. Eli Porete, who xeturned from •Dunedin on Priday night, found the iarticles missing and it is alleged armed 'himself with a hedge slasher and profceeding to his brother's place roused ,'the occupants by smashing the windows. Pulier Porete, it is reported, endeavoured to remonstrate with his brother, but the men got into a hehted argument and came to blows, Eli using ;the slasher and Pulier a double-barrell-j ©d shotgun. It is alleged' a shot was : fired withont injury. As a result of the fight both the slasher and' gun were bxoken and smashed, so it appears fortunate that the conseqnences were not more serious. The niatter is heing dnvestigated by the Oamara police.
