(Received 3, 2.0 p.m.) HONOLULU, July 2. The San Francisco coastguard station has advised that the cutter Itasca was starting out on a search for Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam. The aviatrix sent a radio from her plane at 7.42 a.m., Howland Island time, that she had fuel for half an hour's flyiug left and could not make landfall. An earlier message from New York stated:- — Five hours after leaving Lae for Howland Island, Mrs. Earhart Putnam wirelessed that she was flying at an altitude of 7000 feet at a speed of 140 knots. The San- Francisco coastguard wireless station also made contact with Mrs. Putnam 8£ hours after leaving Lae. She then estimated that she had covered half the distance to Howland Island. 1 Five houTs later she also made contact wiih the coastguard wireless station, but did not give her position.
