SPRINGBOKS WIN

Runaway Victory at Newcastle MUDDY CONUlTIONS

(By Telezraph-

^OopyriRht.)

r NEWCASTLE, Jtme 30. Playing a Newcastle fifteen which ineluded two Sydney players, McLaughlin and Turnbull, who represented New South Wales in recent years, also three other former State players, the Springboks dominated play after the first ten minutes during which seven penalties were awarded against them. The South Africans won by 58 to 8. They seored 16 tries, only five being eonverted by Turner who had many difficult kicks. Half the tries were scored by the forwards, which fact is evidence of.the manner in which they backed up, especially from cross kicks by the wingers. Despite the fact that the°pack was deprived of the back row after the left winger Broodryk was injured shortly before the interval and Vandenberg was withdrawn from the forwards to play on the wing, the ball was won in the scruni3 and lineouta with monotonous frequency, and having overcome the early tendency to infringe the rules the Springboks' backs and heavy forwards combined and Jmndled splendidly, crushing their lighter opponents. It was their fifth successive match on » rnuddv ground, heavy rain having fallen in the morning, but the Springboks were obviously keen to create a good impression and threw the ball about, their tactics being in contrast with those of Saturday's Test. Lochner, Harris, Jennings and Martin, who had previously played only once on the tour, all shaped well, especially Lochner, a utility back who was playing half-back' and made several clever thrusts. Hofmeyer at centre and Turner who started at full-back but in the second half moved to right wing, were also attractive backs. Boy Louw and Shoriff were grand forwards. The tourists had a crop of minor injurles. Broodryk bruiSed a shoulder muscle and Williams, who changed places with Turner in the second half,^ suffered a slight leg iajury, but the only serious casualty at present is Du Toit. Tries were scored for the winners by Bergh (three), Broodryk (three), Louw (two), Turnsj' (two), Williams, Martin, Shoriff, Yamarberg, Babrow and Jennings. ' Turftr eonverted five tries. The Spriijgboks departed for Brisbane to-nig|t.
