Aucklanders' Chances GAY REBEL'S FITNESS
AUCKLAND, This Day. There is a mild Auckland interest in tko Manawatu iixture at Awapuni on Saturday, for a fow nortkern korses mre engagfd, also ouo or two tliat kave recently raced in the north. Among tlie latter is Quadroon, a very good galloper, now trained at Awapujii. Quadroon may develop into a flne handicap horse, and as he kas not done much racing his future will be full of interest. If forward he should make a bold showing in the hack sprint on Satnrday. Valpai, engaged in the Flaxbourne Hurdles, is well up in the weights, and the chances are that he will find something a bit below him just a shade too good. Valpai contested the Steeplechase at Te 'Awamutu last week, and did not race prominently, but he iS likely to shape better over the sticks. He is not an outstanding hurdler, yet may run a good. race. A better prospect may be the Hawera-trained Tout le Monde, who finished second to Killmdar last Saturday. This in itself was not brilliant form. However, the opposition is not exactly brilliant, although there are possibilities, aiid so Tout le Monde shotild about hold his own over the distance.
An Improving • Ch&ser. Lucidus a rapidly-improving performer over country, and so his chanee in the Awapuni Steepleehase is not a' negligible one, despite the fact that he is up against one or two proved performers. His success at Tauranga was impressively aehieved, and his fourth 5n thePark Steepleehase at Te Awamutu suggested further improveihent. Whilo he has not the performances of good horses like Martawatu, Riotous and Forest Glow, at the concession, he is reeeiving froin the ftrst-mentioned two he may be able to hold his own. Gay Rebel's frrospects on his south«rn tour to Awapuni and Trentham have been diseussed already, so suffice it to say that on his effort last Saturday, when he dead-heated with Day Wind and was Very unlueky in the running, he wil] giVe the oppOsitiou in the Palmerston North Handicap some* '".ing to do to keep him out of the money, especiilly if an experienced Tider is in the saddle.
