SOCIAL EVENING

Hastings Machine-Gunners The sOCial evening held by the Hastings Machine-Gunners on Monday night in the Drill Hall was as successful as their previous ones. There was a large attendance, and members were given the opportunity of knowing their fel-low-men and officers from the social sid© of military life. With the presence of Lt.-Colohel A. J. Manson and Captain McCaskill, Captain McBride took the oppottunity on behalf of the men to congratulate Mr Manson on his appoiritment as Sergeant-of-Arms in th® House of Representatives, and also to introduce Captain McCaslrill as the new Adjutant for the Hawke's Bay Regiment. Both men suitably replied. The opportunity was also given the boys to show their appreeiation of the good work that Lieutenant John Redward had done as their oflicer. Captain McBride spoke in glowing terms o^f Mr Redward's work, and on behalf of the men presented him with an engraved wallet, whieh also had the regiment's badge attached. Lieutenant Eedward replied, saying that with men such as he had had under him an oflicer 's job was a comparatively easy one, and he was very sorry that he was leaving. However, with the wallet as a memento he would always remember the Hastings Machine-Gunners. Toasts were accprded the officers, anr, the Mounted Rifies. Sergeant-Major Hayes replied on behalf of the Mounted Rifies. Songs and musical items were given during the evening. Gordon Redward's full orchestra was in attendance, and its orchestral items were fully appreciated. Solo items were given by G. Redward on the piano, Lieut. J. Redward, saxophone, Pte. M. Patamore, mouth-organ, Pte. C. Verry mouth-organ and aceordeon these two instruments being played at the same time, Sergeant J. Hawkins, songs, and a sketeh by Cpl. J. Beale, Ptes. T. Thornburrow and M. O'Donoghue.
