(Eeceived 30, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 29. In the women 's singles quarter-finais at Wimbledon to-day chief interest cenred in Miss E. Mathieu (France), whom it would not be unehivalrous to . call a veteran and who created one of the few sensations of the tournament ' by beating the volatile Miss A. Lizana (Chile), who had been tipped as a finalist. Miss Mathieu 's super steadiness and scientiflc play were always too good for the Chilean, who fought hard. Miss J. Je'drze jowska 's (Poland) ternific foxehand accuracy enabled her to score a runaway victory over Miss M. C. Seriven (Britain). Miss A. Marble XU.S.A.), after being behihd 1/3 in the final set against Mrs Sperling, won the* match chiefly by storming the net, volleying and dropshotting. Miss D. Eound (Britain), whose recent improvement was Shown by her easy defeat of Countess de la Valdene (Spain) yesterday, played the game of her life to-day, beating tbe title-holder, Miss Helen Jacobs (IJ.S.'A.). The Englishwoman showed general superiority and returned even Miss Jacobs % famous chop shot with ease. She won, many points by raiding. the net and "killdng" Miss Jacobs 's retums.
