HORSES AT LARGE
Bakery Company Fined A defence that the horses had been let out by some unauthorised person was made by Mr. W. Selwyn Averill in the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning when tbe Hastings Bakery Co., Ltd., was charged before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., with allowing two horses to wander at large in Hastings street. The prosecution waa conducted by the borough ranger, Mr. H .A. Green, and Mr. Averill, for the defendant, pleaded not guilty. A fine of 10/-, with costs of a similar amount, was impqsed. Inspector D. Mann said that he had ex-amined the fence, which the horses , had apparently got through, and found it thoroughiy inefficient. There were two strands of barbed wirC stre'tched for a distance of more than a chain with ovef 200 paces between the fenceposts. Mr. Averill contended that the. company had taken every precaution against the horses esoaping on to the road, and he said that without doubt they had been let out by some uaauthorised person.
