Mrs. Putnam Leaves for New Guinea f "dAEWIN, June 29. Mrs. Earhart Putnam, who took off at about 7 a.m., expects to reach Lae (New Guinea), 1200 miles away, in eight hours. Air Force men at the direction-finding station made sure that her radio was in perfect order. She wa3 in communication with Darwin at frequent intervals after her depaTture. Mrs. Earhart Putnam was clad in an open blouse and brown slacks. She remarked before elimbing into the cockpit: "I was under the impression that the weather would be very warm, but believe me I am finding it very cold in ■•ha tropics."
