| — ■ — » t ^ w f v M * jl%4pj Left tot A|r in Front of Grate IGNITED BY SPARK Two kapok mattresses on fire in a house in Stortford street, Hastings, were responsible for a call to the Hastings Fire Brigade at 3.30 o 'clock yesterday afternqon. ,, The house was occupied by Mrs L, Hammond, who had been away all day and on returniug foupd her home filled with smoke. Two mattresses had heen left to air in f'rgnt of a fire, and jt ia beiieyed that a spnrk ignited them, The outbreak was confined to the mattresses, howgvqr, andfl on the arrival pf the brigade, they wqre drugged put qn to the lawn in front of the house and sprayed with water, The fire was over witfiin a quarter Pf an hour, but ip that time a large crowd had gathered, The alarm was giyeu just as tlie pchools were emptyiug, and consequently a crowd o£ children followed the eugipe. Au observer at one point in town counted 150 hqys on bicycles, but by the tipe the scqne of the fire had been yeached the number had swelled to over 200, There were no insurajices on the furxjiture, Eefreshments for the brigade were provided by Mrs Hammond. ' '
