Hastings Club's Annual Report S0UND FINANCES In - the 47th annual report and bal* ance sheet to be presented at the anama! meetrng of the Hastings Bowlinj Club on Tuesday, satisfaetion is expressed at the generally sound position of the club7s flnances. The mernbership is numerically oue in advance of the previous year, as despite new members joining some old ones have been lpst by removals. The loss of an esteemed mcmber by the death of Mr. G. C. Lowe is deeply regretted> and fitting reference to his personality and playing qualities is recorded. Reference to t.he greens show that they have receiyed a lot of "attention to improve the playing area. In this respeet the aerating o±; the main green by means of a 'coring* form has had | beneficial efi-ects already, but it is not until the ensuing season7s play is in •j progress tbat full judgment on the value of the. experiment i,„a' be finalised. The greens have reeeived a liberal topdressing, seeding and' manuring as a routirie maintenance work. , Club competitions held over from Ihe 1935-fa season owing to adverse weather were completed early in the season, the winners being; Champion , singles A. W, Parkinson, champion pairs A. WUs6n and J. Kruse, handicap pairs 'H. Claughton and J. Pickering. The winners for the 1936-7 season i were; Champion singles J. E. Hall, champion pairs D. Watters and J. Kruse, handicap pairs S. Taylor and A. . Hampton. I The Distriet Shield for rinks com- ; petition between all clubs in Hawke7s i Bay was won by the Hastings Ciub, marking the eleventh time during the 39 years it has been competed for -that the club has won it. The Napier Club has thirteen wins to its crpdit. The elub was represented at the Dominion championship tournament, in the rinks and pairs, at the East Coast Centre7a j tournament at Hastings and at the Gisborne tournament, but without any signal success. . The champion of champion singles competition was won by the club7s nominee, J. W. Graham, who had a clearcut victory by two wins over all other competitors. • In the champion pairs eontest S. O. Garland. and J. E. Hall proved, the rnnners-up, but1 no 'success was gained in the champion rinks. A notable feature of the club's operations was the great number of interelub visits that were exchanged with local and district clubs, proving of . district and playing value to all eoncerned. A momentous decision was arrived at late in the season when it was resolved to place the smaller green at the disposal of a group of ladies for the purpose of playing croquet. The ladies have forrned a club, and during the ensuing season will be actively engaged in the kindred sport of their menf olks. The report concludes with thanks to the various members who have filled ' honorary offices during the year, and an expression of appreciation to the Press for its assistance in reporting the activities of the club during the past season.
