CAVALRY REMOUNTS

State Subsidy For Breedinl Suggested A. & P. SOCIETY VIEWS The question of a Governinent subsidy for the purpose of breeding horses sqitabie for remount purpose# in fh# Mounted Rifles regimentq of New Zealand was broached at tho annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay Agrioultural and Pastoral Society in Napier - this morning. It was pointed out hy bers that "at present horses suitable for remount purposes were not available and that high costs^ not only prevented their being specially bred but affected the numhers of enlistments in the Mounted Rifles because of the faot that many men could not, afford to buy suitable horses. A scheme which hqe been placed before the G qvernmeut, - and which is at present receiving consideration f proposes that a subsidy should be^ granted pn stallions, reduciug the priee of a suitable horse from the regaon of 25 guineas to a more accegsible. figure. The Hon. H. A. Russell told the meeting that the Government wa# considering tho scheme at present. Mr J. H- MacNiven cpmmented thnt at present there wero few horse# in New Zealand suitable for remount purposes, and that they would be very. hard to flnd in the case of a national emergency. It was nof Uecessary to have a horse that was fast at short distances, but more the type that could carry weight for long distances. The ordinary coh horse was suitable for the purpose if it possessed thoroughbred blood op oue side. The scheme, if carried on, would proyide for the breeding of cavalry remounts not. only . for New Zealand but also. for ISngland* wh.ere.a similar difficulty was being experienced. "You cau't do without cavalry, no mafter what you say,"- commented Mr MacNfven, "espeeially in this type of country.'' • Mr C. E, Twist pointed out that the difficulty at present was that small farmers could not undertake the breeding of horses on the ground# of the high service fees. The scheme made the proposition practicable, he' thought. It was decided to refer the matter to the next meetipg of the committqf1 ■ 1 J. 1 1 - " u
